Although the number of deaths related to drunk driving crashes has declined there are still far too many deadly accidents that are alcohol-related.
Statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that in 2019, just over 10,140 people died across the country in drunk driving crashes.
These deaths accounted for 28% of all motor vehicle accident fatalities for 2019. While admittedly this is better than it has been in years past, with all the emphasis on the dangers of driving while intoxicated, one would expect these numbers to be much lower.
People are continuing to drive under the influence
Part of the problem is that many people are simply ignoring the public warnings about drinking and driving, even when those warnings are backed by strict law enforcement measures.
According to a recent survey, 43% of all people have driven while under the influence of alcohol at least once, and 28% said that they had done so within the last 6 months.
People were willing to justify their actions with a number of excuses. Over 35% said that they only were traveling a few miles. Additionally, 30% of those asked said that they either couldn’t pay for a ride or did not feel comfortable using a cab or a transportation network company.
About 1 in 4 of all people said that they just did not believe they were too drunk to drive.
Particularly among men, though, there is a documented tendency to be overly confident about one’s ability to drive after just a few drinks.
In any event, there is simply no good excuse for a person to drive drunk on North Carolina’s roads. If such people cause an accident, Iredell County victims may be able to recover compensation for their losses.
