Automobiles are popular in Mooresville and the nearby areas of North Carolina. With the attention paid to NASCAR and other activities, this is no surprise. Even with that, the ongoing circumstances in the state and across the nation with the pandemic have led to fundamental changes in peoples’ lives. Working from home, remote schooling, the cancelation of family gatherings and vacations – all have been predicated by the health crisis. Fewer drivers were on the state roadways in 2020 because of it. Strangely, there was an increase in road fatalities. Given the increase in accidents, those who have suffered catastrophic injuries or lost a loved one should be aware of their options after a crash.
Fatalities spike by more than 1,500 across the state
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) says the number of road deaths in 2020 was its highest since 2007. Miles-driven was 19% lower than it had been the year before; fatal accidents spiked by 8%. Analysts believe drivers are using emptier roadways to drive at excessive speed. In total, there were 1,491 fatal accidents in which 1,506 people lost their lives while driving around 24 billion miles less in the state. Along with speeding, drivers were under the influence, left their lanes and failed to wear their seatbelts, stoking the increase.
Around 25% of the accidents were linked to speeding. Teens were especially vulnerable as 154 died. That was 15% higher than in 2019. Closed schools and distracted driving likely played a role. Fatal accidents were on the rise not just in North Carolina, but across the nation. Initial statistical analysis suggests that North Carolina’s fatalities exceeded the national numbers. Although there is hope that the health crisis is in its latter stages, the roads remain treacherous.
Caring legal assistance may be vital after an auto accident
Auto accidents are a constant risk when taking to the road as a driver, passenger, pedestrian or bicyclist. Even if a person survives, there may be severe problems that must be dealt with. Traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, cuts and internal injuries can all result. Major medical costs, lost income and extended health issues can occur. If there is a fatality, the family left behind must consider its alternatives. A legal filing may be needed. Having guidance and advice from a caring and experienced legal professional can be useful to analyze the case and take the necessary steps to help victims and those left behind recover compensation for all that was lost.
